COVID-19 Q&A

Please read the following information below regarding COVID-19 to learn more about our preparation for this summer.

Currently, Camp Rim Rock is planning to open to campers as planned in June. We have canceled any groups that were coming prior to our campers. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, especially rules issued by federal, state and local authorities and adapt our plans accordingly. Meanwhile, we understand that families, campers, and counselors have questions. Below we offer answers to the main queries we’ve received. If you have other questions, please let us know and we will try to address them.

HAS CAMP RIM ROCK EVER SHUT DOWN DUE TO DISEASE OR OTHER REASONS?

Camp has operated for 68 consecutive summers without ever being shut down.

While COVID-19 feels unprecedented, especially as of this writing, we feel confident that as government at all levels, businesses, and individuals together follow best practices, helping to “flatten the curve,” that we will see a return to normal soon.

We have every reason to believe that camp will be open for Summer 2020, our 69th summer!

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE'S A COVID-19 OUTBREAK AT CAMP?

Camp is no stranger to communicable illnesses. We have always had communicable disease policies and procedures in place that we review and revise each year as needed.

Our entire staff is trained on how to operate in the event of a communicable illness outbreak. These procedures are reviewed in staff training with our counselors and medical staff.

HAS CAMP RIM ROCK EVER FACED A DISEASE OUTBREAK DURING CAMP?

There was a national outbreak of H1N1 in 2009. We increased our screenings and asked more specific questions and took everyone’s temperatures. We had one family that was suspected of having H1N1. The children were quarantined and sent home. Nobody at camp developed H1N1 as a result of attending camp.

While the challenge of addressing COVID-19 is daunting, our industry’s past experiences and our own informs our agile and proactive responses.

WILL YOU BE TESTING EVERYONE FOR COVID-19 BEFORE THEY ENTER CAMP?

At this point, we have no way of knowing if testing all campers prior to camp will be an option. We will update this answer as we have more information.

WHAT IS CAMP RIM ROCK DOING TO RESPOND TO THE COVID THREAT?

As parents, educators and camp professionals we are monitoring the rapidly changing information regarding COVID-19. As a valued member of the Camp Rim Rock family, we appreciate the trust you place in us each year, this being no exception.

We are constantly monitoring information disclosed by the CDC, the media, the WV Health Department, the American Camp Association (ACA). We are reviewing our processes and procedures to be sure that best practices are in place for the summer.

The camping industry has been tested before with the management of communicable diseases; from the common cold to H1N1 Swine Flu. While the challenge of addressing COVID-19 is daunting, our industry’s past experiences and our own will inform how we respond.

Since we are planning on Camp Rim Rock operating on a normal schedule this summer, we will be sending out our regular communications to registered camp families. If you are too stressed or busy to deal with them, no worries- we will work with you.

WHAT WILL CAMP RIM ROCK DO TO HELP PREVENT COVID-19 AT CAMP?

In addition to other health and safety measures, such as lice checks, on Opening Day, prior to entering camp, all campers receive a health screening that includes taking their temperature and asking questions about any symptoms (related to COVID or not), exposure to any health risk, and all recent travel.

If any additional screening procedures are encouraged by our health experts, we will be sure that these best practices are in place for the summer.
